What is future journaling and why should you consider doing it?

I’ve written about ‘future journaling’ in a free book I co-authored titled Beyond Bubble Baths. I thought I had shared about it here but it looks like I haven’t. If I have, I missed it when I was searching. I’m going to share an excerpt from the book I just mentioned discussing thoughts and future journaling and then I’ll share one of my recent future journal entries as an example.

Excerpt from Beyond bubble baths:

What is future journaling?

Journaling is part of my morning routine. I have different journals for different things. For example, in one I write about what’s going on, especially things I think are worth noting, such as the Holy Spirit revealing something truly awesome. I also have one where I do what I call future journaling. The YouTube video I watched talking about it was calling it “scripting” but I prefer “future journaling.” It’s writing about your future as though it is happening or has already happened, basically dreaming on paper. I write as though the life I dream of is taking place as I write about it.

Why future journal?

Before something can be manifested in your life, you have to see it in your mind first. What you think ends up happening in your life, whether or not you realise it. If what we think is what ends up happening then our thinking has to be in line with what we want to see in our future. Sometimes it’s not easy to change beliefs or thoughts you’ve had for a long time. If things are going to change though, you have to change those thoughts.

It’s easy to think about what’s already happened in your life and what is happening in your life right now. What’s difficult is thinking about your future and making it contradict your past as well as your present. Thinking of your future as being wonderful and you living the life you dream of, or for some, even beginning to dream because you’ve never thought to do that. That’s the difficult part. And yet, that’s what I’m suggesting you do. Not for me or for anyone else but for yourself. To give you something to look forward to. To give you hope.

A loss of hope leads to feeling bad about your life and about life in general and about a lot of other things. We might get hope from elsewhere but sometimes you need to give yourself hope. Telling yourself you have a bright future ahead of you is one example of that. It’s a way of taking control of your mind. One way you can control your mind is how you start your day because that will filter into the rest of your thoughts during the day. One way I make an effort to control my thoughts for the day is journaling in the morning. Below is an example of one of my future journal entries.

Example of future journaling

September 2, 2022 entry

As I write this I’m in a suite at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. I still can’t believe this is my life! I’m actually staying at the Plaza Hotel!!!!! Such a dream come true. I came on this trip with Mary, (I call her Mer) my best friend, to celebrate my birthday. We came from Mauritius, where I currently live.

I’m so grateful to have Mer on this trip with me because she has become someone very special in my life. We get along extremely well and she loves me and I feel it, just as I love her and she feels it. I truly value our friendship. The friends God has blessed me with are better than I expected. I’m grateful to 2022 Sibo for praying for them because now they are in my life.

We flew first class for the long part of our trip and it was amazing. The Plaza Hotel is better than I expected. I feel like a queen staying here! I feel like I’m living in a movie but it’s real life. I’m loving every bit of it!

My birthday yesterday was such an awesome experience. I woke up with a smile on my face because this is exactly where I wanted to be. I did my morning routine, then Mer and I had breakfast at the hotel. Afterwards we had some pampering done at the hotel spa. We then went for lunch at a lovely restaurant nearby. After lunch we hung out in my room for a bit, before we went to get ready for our evening out.

We got ready together and had our hair and makeup done professionally. We had birthday dinner plans with some connections and friends here in New York. We had a wonderful evening and took plenty of pictures. I got a lot of gifts. The most unexpected gift was a Birkin bag! Someone actually got me a Birkin bag as a gift! What?!!!!! I still can’t believe that I now own my very first Birkin bag! What a special treat! I really am living my dream life. Thank God.

After dinner we went to a cocktail bar and hung out there and continued to celebrate my birthday. It was so much fun. After that Mer and I went back to our hotel. I went to bed with a smile on my face because my birthday celebration went far much better than I expected. Even as I write this I’m still smiling. Thank God for my amazing life and for making me so happy.

Now back to the present. Did you picture that with me? Why not do the same regarding your own future and what you dream of? If you’d like to see more future journal entries, I recently started an Instagram page specifically for future journaling. The handle is @journalingwithsibo.
